It was Friday 5pm as the Cougar team started the tournament off with a skills competition involving agility, relay and shooter drill. The Cougars were victorious taking 2-3 events.
The Cougars then prepared for the start of the tournament with our first game against Cumberland. It was a hard fought battle in which every period would count. With minutes left, we were able to tie up the game giving us much need points, but knew we had to get over our tournament nerves and play as a team.
Saturday morning, Coaches Tim, Whitney and Norm discussed the next strategy to contain the breakaways and play a safer game. Cleary this worked as for the next game against Orleans, the Cougars were able to take all the points and win the game ending in a 6-0 final. Even though there were many new faces to the score sheet including Nick Ross and Dan Morris, Defense was the key to this victory with Nick Persaud on D even popping one in.
That Saturday afternoon, the Cougar team was confident and excited, but at the same time they had just heard the West End Wolverines had beaten Orleans 6-0 and Cumberland 3-1, which meant they would have to turn it up a notch to win. At the team lunch it was stressed by a coach, “there was a way to go, but if we play as a team we could do this.”
Saturday evening, Jon Alleyne was selected to represent his ATOM C team in the all-star, all atom division game. It was a back and forth game with Jon scoring in the final minute getting the win for the All-star white team.
Sunday morning, everything was looking good with a big win, All-star win and a team that was now ‘gelling’ the Cougars headed into game 3 knowing it would be a battle. The Cougars looked great, beating the wolverines to the puck, winning the battles until the final 2 minutes of the game when the wolverines star player had helping to score 2 goals within minutes. The Cougars had to settle for a tie, which gave them enough points to advance to the final. It was bitter sweet though as the Cougars would play the Wolverines yet again.
Sunday evening, the Cougar team entered the arena to cheering Cougar fans shaking tambourines, clappers and noisemakers which were made even louder by the ATOM B parents and players coming out to cheer them on.
The game was a battle as expected, and the Cougars played a tight game, but it was back and forth resulting in a tie game 1-1 at the end of the third. This meant 4-on-4 overtime for the Cougars and Wolverines. Two minutes into overtime, the Wolverines star player was on a breakaway… it looked like it was over for the Cougars… but Ty Remillard-Le, the Cougars goalie made the save, and suddenly the momentum changed. With a scramble in front of the net, Jon Alleyne once again came to the rescue and popped in the overtime winner.
The Cougar trophy is now on its way to our barn at Potvin. Look for it! Go Cougars Go .. grrr…
